InnoGames opening new studio in Dusseldorf

Browser and mobile game developer InnoGames is opening a new studio in Dusseldorf, Germany.

The new office will eventually employ up to 50 staff. InnoGames already houses 350 employees at its headquarters in Hamburg.

The news comes as the developer reported better than expected turnover in 2014 thanks to its mobile operations. The release of Forge of Empires on iPad attracted 1.5 million downloads in the first three months.

“For further growth, we need a number of highly skilled people across all departments. And it gets more and more complicated to find them in Hamburg alone,” said InnoGames CEO Hendrik Klindworth.

“Dusseldorf is a very promising location with lots of potential for the job market.”

Google posts Android Auto design guidelines

Google posted a developer overview for Android Auto, offering guidelines for designing extensions to existing Android apps for customized IVI interactions.

Google announced Android Auto with relatively few details at Google I/O in June, following the formation of an Open Automotive Alliance (OAA) in January. These related efforts are designed to standardize integration with Android devices and in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) systems, as opposed to designing an Android IVI stack that runs the whole show. In some ways, Android Auto is similar to the Car Connectivity Consortium’s MirrorLink technology and Apple’s CarPlay.

Researchers Develop Purely Optical Cloaking

Rambo Tribble writes: Researchers at the University of Rochester have developed a remarkably effective visual cloak using a relatively simple arrangement of optical lenses. The method is unique in that it uses off-the-shelf components and provides cloaking through the visible spectrum. Also, it works in 3-D. As one researcher put it, "This is the first device that we know of that can do three-dimensional, continuously multidirectional cloaking, which works for transmitting rays in the visible spectrum." Bonus: The article includes instructions to build your own.

Terminals: A remote desktop client for (almost) anyone

Windows remote desktop, VNC, telnet, SSH -- there are many ways to access a remote computer, and using them all can require a whole library of networking tools. Fortunately, there are alternatives. The open source Terminals not only handles a lengthy list of protocols -- RDP, VNC, ISA, SSH, Telnet, RAS, HTTP, HTTPS -- but a tabbed interface means you’re able to open and manage multiple connections simultaneously. Too complex for your networking needs? No problem, Terminals also includes a stack of bonus tools which make it useful to just about anyone. Once you realize you have to start it… [Continue Reading]

8 production pipeline tools to keep your game on track

8 production pipeline tools to keep your game on track

Managing teams and projects can be difficult, particularly on large games developed by hundreds of staff.

To help, Develop has rounded up eight tools to manage the production pipeline, keep track of progress and versioning, and ensure your game stays on schedule.

Got a tool you think deserves a mention that isn't listed below? Let us know and we'll add it in.

Perforce

Company: Perforce

www.perforce.com

Perforce is a version management and collaboration tool used by a plethora of small and large triple-A games development studios across the globe.

A number of products are available to improve the workflow and power continuous delivery, including P4D, which is free for up to 20 users, Perforce Swarm, which provides a social code review and collaboration environment for the team, Perforce Commons, Git Fusion and also Perforce Insights.

Hansoft

Company: Hansoft

www.hansoft.com

Now in its eight iteration, Hansoft is an Agile tool for team collaboration and management. The firm recently brought its first round of funding to $10m, and aims to expand its operations worldwide.

The tool itself offers agile scaling to make the software compatible with “super large” companies, while the latest version delivers actionable agile metrics that allow the entire development team to access and visualise metrics to support informed decision-making.

Shotgun

Company: Shotgun Software

http://ift.tt/PlQtxw

Shotgun is a cloud-based toolset that has become a key part of the development pipeline for many devs.

Recently acquired by Autodesk, Shotgun includes a Pipeline Toolkit that comes with open-source APIs and tools to help build and manage the development pipeline.

The tool works out of the box with middleware such as Maya, 3ds Max and Photoshop, and has been used for games such as League of Legends, and World of Warcraft.

SourceTree

Company: Atlassian

http://ift.tt/kOgtv9

SourceTree is a free desktop client from Atlassian for Git and Mercurial distributed version control systems.

Available on Mac and Windows, the management tool allows developers both new and experienced to interface with distributed Git source repositories and organise them using a bookmarks window.

Other features also allow users to visualise work changes over time, detect and resolve conflicts and search commit histories for changes and review file logs.

Jira

Company: Atlassian

http://ift.tt/GElbur

Used by thousands of teams, Jira can be harnessed to capture and organise issues, assign work and follow team activity.

Cloud and server options are available for teams with less than ten users to more than 10,000. Jira 6.3 automatically updates issues when a developer commits code in Stash or Bitbucket, and enhanced reporting in Jira Agile helps identify bottlenecks in the team’s workflow as well as gathering more accurate data on the release date of the next project.

ConceptShare

Company: ConceptShare

www.conceptshare.com

ConceptShare is a creative operations management platform designed to structure and streamline review and approval workflows.

As with many tools, ConceptShare uses analytics and reporting to highlight a project’s status and identify whether there are any bottlenecks. The tool is also flexible, built to enable developers to use it the way they want, allowing users to adjust roles, permissions, workflows and other options to ensure it fits in with the team.

Project Libre

Marc O’Brien and Laurent Chrettieneau

www.projectlibre.org

Project Libre is an open source project management application downloaded over 1m times that runs on the Java platform, and can be used on Linux, Mac and Windows.

Project Libre is actually a fork of OpenProj, which had stopped being updated in recent years, and is developed by the same founders. The tool automatically organises and tracks tasks, and can be used in conjunction with software such as LibreOffice and OpenOffice.

Trello

Company: Trello Inc

www.trello.com

Though it is designed as a To Do list for individual users, Trello can also be used by games development teams to manage a title’s development.

The software uses cards to show progress, and users can be dragged and dropped into specific lists depending on what they are working on. The unique visual approach allows users to see an entire project at a glance, and can be updated in real-time. Devs can also post comments, upload files, add checklists, labels, due dates and more.

Lionhead Incubation shares developer experiments

Lionhead Incubation shares developer experiments

Lionhead has formed a new Incubation department to experiment with ideas and develop game prototypes from them.

The idea grew out of its annual three-day game jam, in which developers work on a project for two days and then present the results on the third.

The first idea to enter the Incubation scheme was InkQuest, part audio book, part adventure game, developed by four developers during its Creative Day last year.

The project was expanded upon and built into a playable prototype, but ultimately didn’t make full production.

Lionhead though plans to continue the scheme and also wants to share what its developers have been up to with the public, including the ideas that don't make it.

You can keep up with the updates on the Lionhead Incubation Twitter account.

Why Python 4.0 won't be like Python 3.0

Newcomers to python-ideas occasionally make reference to the idea of "Python 4000" when proposing backwards incompatible changes that don't offer a clear migration path from currently legal Python 3 code. After all, we allowed that kind of change for Python 3.0, so why wouldn't we allow it for Python 4.0?

I've heard that question enough times now (including the more concerned phrasing "You made a big backwards compatibility break once, how do I know you won't do it again?"), that I figured I'd record my answer here, so I'd be able to refer people back to it in the future.
