Formula 1 Live OTT service to debut at Spanish Grand Prix
Formula 1 confirmed this week that the long awaited launch of its OTT (Over the top TV) service F1 Live will happen at the Spanish Grand Prix. It has been delayed to allow for more testing before going into service.
F1 is partering with NBC Playmaker, iStreamPlanet, CSG, and Ostmodern and Tata Communications to bring the service to fans in May. It will be available in English, French and German to start with.
The live version – F1 TV pro – will feature live races and all 20 driver on board cameras, as well as side-by-side live race viewing and additional exclusive feeds.
According to an F1 statement, “Subscribers will be able to personalise the way they watch a Grand Prix, the content they view and how and when they access it. All of practice, qualifying and races will be offered live, along with press conferences and pre- and post-race interviews. Later in the season, the main support series FIA Formula 2 Championship, GP3 Series and Porsche Supercup will be added to the service.”
F1 TV will initially launch on desktop. Apple, Android and Amazon Fire mobile and tablet devices will launch shortly thereafter. By summer, the service will also be available to fans on Amazon Fire TV, Android TV and Apple TV. Customers can pay an annual fee of US $70-$150, with monthly rates ranging from $8-12.
It is only available in certain countries, like Germany, where F1 still retains the Digital rights. It is not available in the UK and Italy for example, where SKY has those rights. (The full list is below)
A more basic service “F1 TV Access” will be available on a nearly global basis. It will provide live race timing data and radio broadcasts and extended highlights of each session from the race weekend. It will also package up video content from F1’s extensive video archive.

F1 Live OTT platform to feature 24 live streams – “Pretty Insane”
More details have emerged about the new F1 Live OTT platform, as outlined by F1’s head of marketing Ellie Norman, who describes the boldness of the project as ‘pretty insane’.
Typing the words ‘F1’s head of marketing’ still feels slightly strange, seeing as for decades it was the only global Tier 1 sport that did not even have a marketing department, let alone a head.
Bernie Ecclestone used to rely on manufacturers, race promoters and sponsors to market the sport of Formula 1 for him. This kept the overheads down on the F1 Management side, while Ecclestone gleefully whipped up regular media attention by lobbing in regular hand grenades, which the newspapers gratefully jumped on.
Now it’s all rather different, although the infrastructure to make the new F1 Live OTT platform was all put in place by Ecclestone. He just chose not to use it for that, as he was all about protecting the rights of his broadcast partners.
Norman was previously at cable TV supplier Virgin Media and believes that the nature of the modern consumer who has a passion point is “… that passion tends to overrule the rational side of things; it is not uncommon if you have a pay TV bundle that you will have one or two of the top subscriptions. I think that with consumer behaviour and the desire to buy things you love, consumers are making that choice. If you are interested you will pay.”
That is the calculation; that of the potential audience for F1, identified at 500 million sports fans around the world, even if 1% of them paid their $8 a month for the OTT service, that would yield $40m a month, or almost half a billion dollars a year.
There is also the opportunity to upsell the packages in future; a Lewis Hamilton fan in Delhi could access more rich content about Hamilton and he could take a revenue share. There is also great value to F1 and its partners from the data that would be gathered about the consumers.
But for now it’s all about going direct to the fans and to make the fans’ access to F1 as frictionless as possible.
“Everyone is offering fans more direct access, we are incredibly fortunate with the access that we have through our sport,” Norman (above) said in an interview with digital media title The Drum. “We are going direct to the fan so we are then able to give them the best experience possible,” she told The Drum. There is nowhere else out there with 24 livestreams coming into the app and that is pretty insane – I don’t think that has been done before.”
“It is a very strategic sport and for that hardcore fan, they really understand the excitement but the strategic elements, having the ability to personalise how you watch it and being able to select favourite drivers and view that side by side, these are all elements where we can better serve our fans.”
The F1 OTT service will be rolled out in about two dozen countries, including USA, France, Germany and some Latin American markets – those where F1 has not ceded the digital rights to TV broadcast partners. That is the case in UK and Italy where Sky has the rights. F1 is talking to Sky about bundling the OTT rights.
What do you think of the F1 OTT platform and if you live in an eligible country, will you buy it? Leave your comments below

F1 announces social media partnership with Snapchat before British GP
Formula 1 and Snap Inc, the social media company which owns social media platform Snapchat, have announced a new partnership to cover grands prix.
Lewis Hamilton was criticised for using Snapchat – the mobile and tablet application which allows users to share photos and videos to their own ‘Story’ and view their contacts’ ‘Stories’ – during the 2016 Japanese GP Thursday press conference, for which he later apologised.
Companies, media outlets and major events also curate stories, which group those photos and videos over 24 hours, after which they are deleted.
F1 is focusing on the ‘Discover’ part of the app, which compiles photos and videos – ‘Snaps’ – submitted by users and collates them under a collective story during an event. A team of editors and producers at Snapchat will review the photos before they are viewable to F1’s audience on the app.
The deal is F1’s first commercial deal with a digital and mobile-orientated platform and it will begin at the British Grand Prix on Sunday, continuing in Singapore, Japan, the USA, Mexico, Brazil and Abu Dhabi. The collaboration with Snapchat is part of F1’s ongoing push to engage fans with social media and digital platforms, including its mobile (Official F1) app, its website with live timing.
Notably, Liberty has relaxed its rules for teams and drivers on sharing video content, with clips pre-season testing shared on Twitter and Facebook marking a change from the motorsport’s previous era of management.
Frank Arthofer, Head of Digital and New Business at F1, said: “This is the first step towards expanding our social media strategy.
“Right from the start, we have said we want to work with partners to bring fans closer to the amazing show that is Formula 1, an incredible mix of technology and individual talent – and Snap fits that bill.
“We need to continue to bring new fans to the sport – by reaching out to them on social media platforms with behind the scenes, fun and engaging content.
“Snap’s platform is one of the most popular among ‘millennials,’ a sector we are particularly keen on attracting, as it represents the future of our sport.”
The app has more than 166 million daily active users around the world and more than 3 billion Snaps are sent every day. The platform also supports advertisers and partners with other sports leagues, outlets and broadcasters such as Sky Sports, NASCAR, EA Sports, Fox Sports and MotoGP.
“We want to work with the most iconic sporting organizations in the world, that are beloved by our global community of passionate and highly engaged fans – and working with Formula 1 has been at the top of our wishlist for a long time.”, said Ben Schwerin, Snap Inc’s Vice President of Partnerships.
“Our goal is simple – we want to make being a fan more fun no matter where you are and Snapchat offers unique and creative ways to experience it with their closest friends.
“We are honoured to be the first platform they are partnering with, and are excited to start offer their teams, partners and advertisers an opportunity to reach millions of Snapchatters around the globe.”
Will you be using Snapchat to engage with the upcoming grands prix? Have your say in the comment section below.

2018 F1 calendar announced by FIA – Germany and France return
Formula 1 will have three consecutive races for the first time next year as the FIA has announced its 2018 calendar will include the French, Austrian and British Grands Prix on successive weekends.
With the return of the French GP at Circuit Paul Ricard and the German round at Hockenheim, the 21-race calendar was approved at the FIA’s World Motor Sport Council meeting in Geneva, Switzerland.
The Azerbaijan GP moves from June to April, before Spain, while the Russian GP has switched from April to September, before the Japanese round; the Malaysian GP has dropped off the calendar after 19 years.
The 2018 Le Mans 24 Hours was also approved for June 16/17 and will not clash with F1. The rest of the World Endurance Championship schedule is yet to be announced.
The FIA says that the races in China and Singapore are subject to commercial rights holder confirmation and its next World Motor Sport Council meeting, to be attended by 110 National Sporting Authorities, will take place in Paris on September 21 2017.
